Electrical Licenses
You must hold a valid electrical license or be an electrical journeyman or trainee while employed or supervised by a licensed electrician to perform any installation, maintenance, alteration, or repair on any electrical equipment within the City of Lafayette. For a list of exceptions please reference Chapter 13.06.010(d) of the Municipal Code.

The City of Lafayette issues the following commercial electrical licenses:
Commercial or Industrial includes all facilities, structures, machinery, and fixtures other than those used or designed for residential purposes, provided however, multifamily units of four or more are considered commercial. Any electrician licensed to perform commercial or industrial electrical work is also licensed to perform residential electrical work.
1. Commercial/Industrial Electrical Contractor's License
Entitles holder to engage in the business of electrical construction and supervision including but not limited to, industrial, institutional, commercial, residential, and sign construction.
Applicants applying for a contractor's license must present proof of insurance*, and: (1) Have ten (10) or more years experience in the practice of electrical construction; or (2) Have at least 6 years experience in the practice of electrical construction and hold a diploma from a four-year electrical engineering college or university; or (3) Pass the required examination for the particular license sought.
2. Commercial/Industrial Electrician's License
Entitles holder to perform all types of industrial, institutional, commercial, residential, and sign construction.
Applicants applying for a commercial/industrial electrician's license must present proof of insurance*, and: (1) Have five (5) or more years experience in the practice of electrical construction and obtain certification from a commercial/industrial contractor license holder that the applicant has the experience and knowledge to qualify for the license sought; or (2) Pass the required examination for the particular license sought.
*Proof of general liability insurance in the minimum amount of two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($250,000.00) shall be a requirement for obtaining and renewing an electrical license.
The City of Lafayette issues the following residential electrical licenses:
Residential includes housing units which are used or designed to be used as living units, including all multifamily housing units, excluding multifamily four or more units which are considered commercial.
Residential Electrical Contractor's License
Entitles holder to engage in the business of residential electrical construction and supervision.
Applicants applying for a contractor's license must present proof of insurance*, and: (1) Have ten (10) or more years experience in the practice of electrical construction; or (2) Have at least 6 years experience in the practice of electrical construction and hold a diploma from a four-year electrical engineering college or university; or (3) Pass the required examination for the particular license sought.
Residential Electrician's License
Entitles holder to perform all phases of residential type electrical construction.
Applicants applying for a residential electrician's license must present proof of insurance*, and: (1) Have four (4) or more years experience in the practice of electrical construction and obtain certification form a residential contractor license holder that the applicant has the experience and knowledge to qualify for the license sought; or (2) Pass the required examination for the particular license sought.
